4-step Guide to buying a Diamond Engagement Ring

Hints and tips on selecting the perfect Diamond Engagement Ring

An engagement ring is essentially made up of three main components: the diamond (1), the setting (2) which holds it in its place and the band or shank (3).

(1) How do I select the diamond?

The diamond usually represents 80-90% of the overall cost of the ring. It is therefore important to know the basics to make the right choice. For a simple guide to diamonds, see our guide on the 4 C's.

One of the first steps is to choose the diamond shape desired. Round brilliant cut is the most popular, and for this reason, more expensive than other shapes. Fancy shapes like Pear and Marquise are more unusual but equally stunning.

The carat weight is an important consideration as it has a visual impact on the look you want to achieve. Some consider the half carat diamond as the perfect size, whereas others consider the one carat as the ideal. Much depends on the budget, as well as preference.

The other factors to consider when selecting the diamond are its colour and clarity. As guidance, VS2 is a very good clarity grade and F is an extremely good (white) colour for a diamond.

For your peace of mind all diamonds purchased from Congenial Diamonds that are 0.25 carat in weight or over, are automatically issued with a Diamond Grading Certificate from an independent gemological laboratory. This is the only guarantee of the quality and value of the diamond that is being purchased.

 (2) There are so many settings to choose from. Which is the perfect one for her?

Does she prefer the classic style? Or prefer to make a statement?

  • Examples of the most classic styles are the 4-claw or 6-claw solitaire engagement rings

These settings are very popular due to their simplicity. In most cases, simple is just beautiful − these designs are just that.

The vintage-style setting, consisting of smaller diamonds surrounding the main central diamond, has increasingly gained popularity in the last couple of years. This particular design gives added sparkle and timeless elegance.
